St. Theodore, 9th-10th century, from the Patleina Monastery near Preslav, glazed ceramics, 20 separate white clay tiles, 50x44 cm, National Archaeological Museum. St. Theodore is depicted in full face, waist length. The stylized line, monumental image and distinct shape are the main characteristic features of this icon, one of the first in East Orthodox art painted immediately after the iconoclastic period. It is executed in the traditions of the East and the murals in the churches of Cappadocia of the 10th-11th centuries. There are other icons of similar style of execution, technique and type but smaller in size, unearthed later during archaeological excavations in the region of Touslaluk by Preslav and are now on display in the museum in Preslav. |
